2024 was another busy year for North Midlands Project.
Our Here+Now residency program kicked off with a mix of new and returning artists, who each delivered an exhibition, artist talks, open studios, community workshops, and a series of school activities utilising The Kids Research Institute Australia's SEW-Arts framework. We welcomed basketmaker Glenda Blyth, felt artist Martien van Zuilen, artist jeweller Sultana Shamshi, printmaker Francesco Geronazzo, textile artist Deidre Robb, and writer Sarah-Jayne Eeles.
We were delighted to expand Women of the Hinterlands with photographer Martine Perret. The exhibition was relaunched at the Helen Ansell Gallery in Mullewa on International Women's Day before visiting Gardiner Street Arts Collective in Moora, the Town Hall in Perenjori, Saint John of God Hospital in Geraldton, and The HEART Nala Bardip Mia in Martine's hometown of Margaret River.
Throughout the year we programmed a range of exhibitions across The Bank Gallery in Carnamah, The Exchange+Gallery in Mingenew, with Gardiner Street Arts Collective in Moora, and at other pop-up locations. A highlight was the culminating exhibition of our Time+Place residencies, showcasing locally produced works created collaboratively by the community with watercolour artist Geraldine Box, multidisciplinary artist Stuart McMillan, felt artist Martien van Zuilen, and visual artists Helen Ansell and Gabrielle Butler.
Naomie Hatherley from Broome spent time undertaking an Activating Collections residency, which we hosted jointly with the Carnamah Historical Society & Museum. It was a joy to show Naomie's renowned Keeping Score exhibition to new audiences and for her to create work connecting to our local stories with Tymia Councillor.
2024 saw the continuation of the statewide experiences tour of our Ebb+Flow exhibition. The exhibition and its programs visited The Painted Tree Gallery in Northcliffe, The HEART Nala Bardip Mia in Margaret River, Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda, Town Hall in Waroona, The Hampton Gallery in Northampton, and Denmark Arts Council in Denmark.
In Geraldton, we were delighted to deliver a regular program of Sew-Ins, Walk & Talk exhibition tours, creative family studios, multicultural playgroup activities, and workshops in collaboration with Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.
We assisted West Australian Opera to deliver workshops at local schools across the North Midlands and worked with DADAA to host a range of accessible workshops.
In October we held our Unity Arts Festival across Morawa and Carnamah, which was part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial's IOTA24. This peaked with an unforgettable Night @ The Bank Gallery of live music, an exhibition launch, opera performances, a film screening, live sketching, workshops, and artist talks.
The year had a phenomenal conclusion with the Dogs Welcome exhibition curated by Shiona Herbert, which filled The Exchange in Carnamah alongside a range of unique and greatly appreciated community experiences.
In 2024 we were proud to promote creativity through the Act Belong Commit message in partnership with Healthway and to receive support from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries; Lotterywest; Mid West Development Commssion; National Indigenous Australians Agency, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development; Good Things Foundation; Meerilinga Foundation; and the Government of Western Australia's Regional Exhibitions Touring Boost through Art on the Move.
