Sammy Jay
2019 Act Belong Commit Youth Ambassador
"Many artists create works about how they feel; I create works on how I want to feel."
Sammy Jay is an emerging Mid West visual artist passionate about building awareness and being a positive advocate for people with disabilities and mental health disorders.
Sammy's work is inspired by plants and flowers, and features bright, bold colours. Using aerosol, acrylic markers and sometimes fabric, she loves to create a spectrum of beautiful blooms and flower-filled scenes. Sammy has Autism Spectrum Disorder and anxiety and describes her work as "aggressively happy". She hopes her whimsical creations bring a little joy to whoever sees them.
Sammy has created a commissioned collection for headspace, designed and painted a tree for the City of Greater Geraldton's Christmas Tree Trail and is currently working on launching her range of products. She is hoping that her unique perspective will enable her to grow and thrive in the art world.
You can see Sammy's work 'Mary' in our online exhibition A Pastoralist Family and view samples of her work on Facebook and Instagram.
