Act-Belong-Commit Young Artist Academy

HUFFIN PUFFIN GAME

Hi there, I'm Lizzy!

I’m an artist living in Geraldton in the Mid West region of Western Australia. Each week I'll be adding a new Young Artist Academy activity that uses materials found around your home that the whole family can enjoy. Parent supervision is recommended for those under 13.

The Huffin Puffin Game!

This is an easy game to make with some household items and scissors. You can be as imaginative with your decorating as you like. You can also change the rules to turn it into a counting game or easily convert to two-player mode. The whole family can join in the fun with a Huffin Puffin tournament.

To keep the fun going you can also book a free 'Family Zoom' session with me for this activity. Click here to book a session. (Family Zooms are available to people living in the Mid West region of Western Australia)

If you have a question, please email me at lizzy@northmidlands.org.au

Materials

Optional Extras

• White A4 paper

• Glue

• Textas/pencils/crayons

Items you need

• 1 or 2 empty small boxes

• Extra cardboard (thick- from a big box)

• Empty squeezy bottle

• Scissors

STEP ONE...

Prepare your goals

Cut the top folds off your box.

Cut a square or rounded hole out of the top of one of the sides approximately 4 x 4cm.

The box is placed upside down on a table and becomes your goals.

STEP TWO...

Make your Sliders

Take your thick cardboard and draw a circle (doesn't need to be perfect) approximately 3cm wide.

Cut this out and then repeat, using first one to trace the shape if you like.

You will need about 10-15 sliders.

If you don’t have thick cardboard, you can also use large buttons, connect four disks, lego blocks, anything that will slide easily with air pushed from the squeezy bottle.

STEP THree...

PLAY THE GAME!!

Place box on table, cut outs pointing down.

Player 1 lines up the disks in a row 30-45cm away from the box. Using the empty squeezy bottle player 1 must blow as many disks into the goals that they can in 60 seconds, only using the air from the bottle.

The next player does the same thing.

There can be as many players as you want.

The player with the highest points WINS!!!

If you make two goals and have two squeezy bottles you can play 2-player with both players playing against each other at the same time.

Optional Extras for this Challenge

Glue or tape A4 paper to your goals, draw and colour in your goals however you wish. You can also personalise your sliders.

This can be made into a maths game where players must call out their score before they can begin blowing the next slider. The points value of the sliders can change each game. I’d love to hear how you alter the game to suit the materials you have and if you change the rules to make the game even more fun.

Act-Belong-Commit FAMILY ZOOM

Pull up a chair... welcome to our Act-Belong-Commit Family Zoom! You and your family are invited to choose a time with Lizzy to participate in a mini family workshop to create the Huffin Puffin game!

For a safe, personal and social experience, each session is designed for one family and our creative. Sessions are free and run for around 20 minutes in a private Zoom room. Extended family members are encouraged to join in from different locations.

Please click here to book a Family Zoom session for this activity.

As our sessions are designed as a safe space for people of all ages to get creative together, we ask that a parent is on the session at all times.
